Types of Massage Therapy: An Overview

Many people like to get massages on a regular basis, however, it’s often viewed as a mere luxury. If you look further into it, however, you’ll see that massage therapy is actually a good way to treat a variety of conditions and to improve the condition of your body.

There are many different kinds of massage that can be used to ease muscle soreness. It may be a bit confusing at times, parsing out what type of massage is best for your situation. After all, there are so many different types that some must just be fads, right? However, this isn’t really true. All types of massage are valid and offer unique benefits. Many provide different kinds of therapy. Some use long strokes another used short strokes. Other use light touch with other use lots of pressure.

In some cases, percussive strokes are used on the muscles to ease tension. You may find some massage therapy clinics using oils on your skin will understand. You may be asked to undress for massage but in other cases you may stay closed. Depending on the type of massage performed, your session could last for just a few minutes for up to a couple of hours.

Figuring out what type of massage will depend on what your end goal is. Do you just want to relax and ease muscle tension? Or, do you need a massage to relieve pain or the symptoms of a medical problem? Finding the answer to this question will help you figure out what type of massage is best for you.

You may not realize it, but massage therapy can be extremely beneficial for more than just back pain. It can also help to treat chronic headaches, osteoarthritis, anxiety, depression, and even the side effects of cancer treatment.
